Habitat Tunnel Book - Age 8

As a third-generation educator, teaching is part of how I relate to the world. I grew up watching my mother captivate groups of children with her love of music and joy for learning. As a student, I was fortunate to have several teachers whose influence and inspiration sparked my own lifelong passion for making. I find renewed energy and hope when I engage with community as an educator.

I believe art can be a catalyst for conversations that are otherwise hard to approach.

As an arts educator, I am able to open discussions across generations on environmental challenges, spirituality and grief, and what it means to live sustainably.

I believe students learn best when encouraged to follow their interests and build a personal connection with creative making.

The classroom should be a collaborative space where students and teachers co-create the learning experience—brainstorming ideas together and making group decisions about projects.

I find that collaboration, transparency, and honesty cultivate group buy-in and genuine excitement.

Every medium I teach has a different sensory experience, a different history, and different ways they have been used as artistic language. Not everyone will feel a natural affinity with every medium, but I believe everyone can find their creative voice when exposed to different ways of making. In my classes, I offer a variety of demonstrations and encourage students to pursue the projects that resonate with them most.

When designing lesson plans, I aim to provide multiple pathways to understanding the material - through physical examples, written instructions, step-by-step demonstrations, and opportunities for students to explore with their voices and bodies. I incorporate brain breaks, research corners, tea time resets, and nature walks to help students self-regulate and return to the classroom ready to engage in making. I find that when students have the space to balance themselves, they stay curious and engaged in the class.

My goal is to equip students with the knowledge and confidence to continue creating beyond our time together. Access to tools and materials can be a barrier to creative making, so I strive to make students comfortable with every part of the process - from sourcing materials to completing projects. At the end of each class, students will have finished at least one portfolio-worthy project that reflects their own interests and skills.
